A distinguished Line Of Delta Lawyers

Alfred R. King arrived in Delta, Colorado in 1886, and among his other pursuits, he opened a law practice. He was later appointed as the first Delta County Judge. In 1904, he recruited Clyde H. Stewart to join him in his law practice at 360 Main Street. Judge King moved to the newly created Colorado Court of Appeals in 1911. Stewart then joined with King’s son Fred and attorney Mortimer Stone in the early 1920’s. In 1931, A. Allen Brown joined the firm, which moved into an office at 365 Main Street, the upstairs of the Hillman building. Clyde’s son, Roderick (“Rod”) Stewart joined the firm in 1937. Clyde died in March 1938. Rod and Allen practiced at the 365 Main Street office until 1961, at which point Rod opened a solo practice at 415 Palmer Street. He practiced there until 1982, when he retired and left his practice to Aaron R. Clay and Michael R. Dodson.

roderick “rod” stewart

Roderick N. Stewart was the only child of Judge Clyde H. and Pearl (Hibbs) Stewart. He a lifelong Delta resident and graduated from the University of Denver College of Law in 1937. In 1942 Stewart married his wife of 60 years, Margaret E. Banks, at her parents Delta home. In 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served in Newfoundland and Ft. Worden, Washington. When he returned to Colorado, Stewart became an active member of the City and County of Delta. He was president of the first school board of Joint District 50, served on the City of Delta Charter Convention, helped organize the Delta Finance Company, and he was a lifetime member of the Delta Savings and Loan Association. During his distinguished law career, Stewart served as Vice President of the Colorado Bar Association, as District Attorney for one term, and as County Attorney for several years.
